Universal crystal, the world's third largest semiconductor silicon wafer factory, held a press conference on the 13th. It is optimistic that the global semiconductor silicon wafer will still be in short supply in the next three years. The production capacity of universal crystal's 12 inch silicon wafer has been pre purchased by the end of 2019, and the 8-inch silicon wafer will be full by the first half of next year. At the same time, the shortage phenomenon is also spreading towards 6-inch products. Silicon wafers are important raw materials for the semiconductor industry. Silicon wafers are needed for large manufacturers such as TSMC, liandian, Samsung and Intel to produce or contract chips for customers.
With the large shortage of silicon wafers, the rush for goods in the industry is spreading. Because of their large scale and maintaining a long-term good supply relationship with silicon wafers, TSMC, Samsung and Intel are limited to be affected. However, second and third tier wafers and emerging manufacturers may face the problem of missing materials and impacting production. Universal crystal benefited from this wave of large shortage of silicon wafers and increased prices. Universal crystal spokesman Li Chongwei said that according to the statistics of research institutions, the global market demand for 12 inch silicon wafers will maintain a growth trend by 2021. It is estimated that the annual compound growth rate will be about 7.1% in the five years from this year to 2021, and the annual compound growth rate of 8-inch wafers will also reach 2.1%.
This wave of good market conditions is mainly related to the imbalance between supply and demand in the market. With limited new capacity in the industry, but driven by the rapid rise of mainland wafer factories and large demand, silicon wafers are in short supply. Li Chongwei said that the main demand of the 12 inch wafer factory comes from advanced logic chips, memory and image sensors; The 8-inch is from the Internet of things, automotive electronics, power management IC and image sensor.
According to his analysis, the production capacity of 12 inch silicon wafers will grow at an annual growth rate of 5% in the next few years. At present, the global production capacity is 5.5 million pieces per month, which means that the global production capacity will increase by 200000 to 300000 pieces per year. After universal crystal was incorporated into SunEdison in December last year, it began to warm up and grow. Li Chongwei said that last year, the price of silicon wafers per square inch was US $0.67, which rose to US $0.69 in the first quarter of this year and US $0.76 in the last quarter. Although the price rose quarter by quarter this year, it is still lower than the average performance of US $1 in 2009, which represents that there is still room for price growth.
